| | | Baby bird help pls.. I am afraid the cat brought home a baby bird last night
Injury wise, there is a nasty wound on a wing joint, although it can still move the wing, and a small piercing on it's back however it has survived the night and with a heck of a lot of jaw prising this morning was very eager to have some food This consisted of mashed cat biscuit mixed with water, as suggested by a website.
I think there will be a trip to the vets or other organisation today to check the injury, I put some anti-septic cream on for now not knowing what to do...
So any extra help will be appreciated! Cat food biscuit really ok? How about mixing in a little fish food (ground-up insects) or am I way off the mark here?
I have temperature set to roughly 30 C it would be helpful if someone could tell me an acceptable range...
Worried about infection setting in however I don't suppose there is a lot I can do here, apart from clean up on a regular basis?
Anything else to look out for?
PS
Luckily we are both off work atm so time wise is something that we should just about manage! I guess day trips are off for a while lol! |

| | | Re: Baby bird help pls.. Just spoken to animal rescue centre they have said quickest thing I can do is take to a vet and they will take over.. Surprised tbh I doubt a vet will be able to assist with that much time!
I will ring a vet as I know I need to get some antibiotics and have the thing checked over so I guess it won't harm to ask! |

be careful with vets .. sometimes they say leave them to die or take nature its course .... You do need antibiotics though I would think if he is pierced....
I do hope the little thing pulls through x |

| | | Re: Baby bird help pls.. Thanks Elswood girl, yes it appears vets only offer euthenisation, local animal sanctury says take to vets, RSPCA awaiting a call from them hopefully.
Anyway, time for a feed! |

| | | Re: Baby bird help pls.. ok I just took to a vet who offered to check it over - got there expecting to see a vet and they took the bird off me! Didn't expect from talking over the phone tbh however I have got their reassurance that they do not euthanise unless injuries or health are a problem and they pass on to a rescuer after checkup. Got rescuers and I will be checking up on them!
I feel gutted now because I am not sure what its fate is. I could imagine them deciding to euthanise for any number of reasons other than health despite their assurance. Got my fingers crossed for the little fella and hopefully I did the right thing |

| | | Re: Baby bird help pls.. It's a very young blackbird.
You must keep your cat indoors as it has clearly found a nest - if it hasn't already then it will eventually kill them all or bring them home. |

| | | Re: Baby bird help pls.. Well just got the sad news that the bird was put down, something to do with it being very young and talked about it still having its yolk sack (what exactly does that mean? it ate, poohed and seemed ok!?!) and it would never learn to fend for itself etc.. Never mentioned the injury just what seems like a predetermined list of excuses to me
I won't be getting advice from T********n Park Veterinary Centre of Hazel Grove in future, at least other centres said exactly what their policy was!
@RKB we do every year at this time and in the 5 years we have had her she has brought very little home, and this is the second time she has ever brought a bird home! Always called home before sunset too. Irrelevant I know but rest assured we do everything we can to avoid this very occurrence! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
