| | Spotted flycatcher behaviour Thrilled to have had spotted flycatchers nest in our garden this year and four young have fledged today. They nested on top of a closed nest box used by blue tits and great tits in past years which is situated in a climbing rose on our garage wall. What I don't understand is why the parents kept picking petals from the pink flowers and flying off with them. We saw them do this frequently after feeding the chicks. Anyone any ideas? |

| | | Re: Spotted flycatcher behaviour That's tremendous news- they are a rapidly declining species in the UK, so great to hear this success story.

| | | Re: Spotted flycatcher behaviour Perhaps its because they think that the bright colours will draw attention to the nest. |

| | | Re: Spotted flycatcher behaviour Got a lovely pic of one taht had just fledged the other day. Re the petals, The adults remove the youngs poo on most nest visits, if you were getting a mouthful of poo every 5 mins throughout the day youd want something to kill the taste too lol

| | | Re: Spotted flycatcher behaviour Thanks for your thoughts everyone. The four fledglings spent the night in the walnut tree and are still about as I can hear them shouting to their parents.
Yes, we feel very lucky to have had flycatchers in the garden although it has been super stressful as we have a cat who has been on house arrest since the adults started feeding. She has only been allowed out under supervision for an hour in the afternoon and between 10pm and early morning. I even set my alarm to get her in by 4am before first light when I knew the little ones were about to fledge. My partner thinks I am mad but as we now have successful fledglings even he agrees it has probably been worth it. |
