bird egg identification

Hello
Can anyone help to identify the egg in the posted pic?
I found it this morning in my garden plants.
It is broken and empty and having read a few posts about it being illegal to have bird eggs, have left it there.
I am just curious to what bird it came from.
I have linked the pic below (in think)

That does make sense as we have lots of house sparrows, but I thought that it was way too big to come from a sparrow.
I thought it could have been a Starling or Blackbird.
How many eggs do sparrows lay?

Usually between 3 and 5 - sometimes more. Incubation 11 - 14 days and then a further 15 days in nest.

Agree it looks like House Sparrow. It's on the large side though (26 mm?). Checked BTO Birdfacts and they give size as 22 x 16 mm. It might be a bit compressed though, and they can be variable.
