| | Abandoned sparrow - advice needed. I am new to this but really hope someone out there can at least give me some advice. We had a family of sparrows nesting next to our house but unfortunately my husband found two dead sparrows a couple of weeks ago. We weren't sure at the time whether these were the young or the parents but it now seems as though it was possibly the parents!! There now seems to be just one sparrow in this nest which has obviously managed to feed itself (it would be long dead by now otherwise) but will not go far from its nest at all and just cherps (quite loudly) most of the day. It really seems as though it is calling out for someone - this is really quite sad. My real query is whether it will automatically do the things sparrows do and find a mate and fly off in the winter (do sparrows actually fly south in the winter??) or will it not really know quite what to do. I really do feel sorry for this poor lonely sparrow.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

The 2 dead sparrows may be the parents, however more likely one or both of the parents may in fact be alive and well!
However when you say the Sparrow appears to be feeding itself, this is not possible. I would say that one of the parents, likely the female, will be regularly bringing food to the nest.
By the way, what plumage did the two dead birds have?
So to sum up, I would leave the young Sparrow alone to let nature take it's course. |

| | | Re: Abandoned sparrow - advice needed. think you will find that it will be the male sparrow, these little fellows chirp all day long, chances are the 2 dead ,are chicks and have fallen from the nest, the male has a brown head with grey at the back, if im right on this, chances are the female will be sitting on the nest, rossy. |

| | | Re: Abandoned sparrow - advice needed. Thanks for all your replies. The bird is definitely on his own, we can't see inside the nest as he is nesting in the air vent on the wall of our next door neighbour's house but there is only the one that is ever there. The dead birds were definitely adults and the one that is left had obviously been fed for long enough to provide for itself. We know he is healthy and now probably almost fully grown so not really any worries there. I am now just hoping he doesn't die of loneliness!!! Bless him!!!
Thank you (I think) to The Woodman!!!! |

| | | Re: Abandoned sparrow - advice needed. Leave alone. If both parents were dead then the chicks would die within hours. So at least one parent has to be alive, and there's nothing you need to do. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
