| | | Bird id if poss please Hi, this is probably a non starter but someone may be able to interpret my attempt. I saw & heard a bird while I was leaning on a gate looking over a field. I saw a bird flitting in & out of a tangled mass of hedge/brambles/ivy obviously a nest in there as it had stuff in its beak. My gut instinct said some sort of warbler (even tho not seen one before) it was that small brown job looking thing, I couln't see any distinctive eyestripe or any type of stripes or distinguishing features, it was smaller than a sparrow, I know it wasn't dunnock, blackcap, sparrow etc as I get all those in my garden, but I couldn't really get a good look as it was in the bushes & moving about a lot. I thought it had some sort of a crest ( or at least it looked like a few of it's head feathers were slightly raised) but it could have been the wind .
Now I wouldn't really expect anyone to id it on that terrible description but what made me really take note of it was the noise it was making. I couldn't describe it as a song as it was just the one noise repeated over & over again, so I wondered if it was some sort of alarm call. It was a sort of low buzzing noise repeated over & over again, not rapidly but it lasted for about a second & repeated about every few.
I've looked up a few birds & songs but none of the sounds matched but the closest looking id I saw was willow warbler or chiff chaff
Anyone heard a bird making that sort of noise?

| | | Re: Bird id if poss please Id guess Whitethroat, they have a crest and it sounds like the exact kind of place they like to nest in.

| | | Re: Bird id if poss please I'd agree with fudgey on this one. From the discription of the call and as fudgey said, the crest and habitat sound right too.

| | | Re: Bird id if poss please Thanks guys, so excited, never seen one of these before, am only really familiar with garden birds. I looked up white throats & found this quote:
"Whitethroats normally skulk in bushes and hedges, ..... They are also very inquisitive and will perch at the top of the bush to investigate, before scolding the intruder with a rapid churring call."
That describes the incident perfectly.
Am really chuffed now.
