| | | Urgent help needed Our cat brought in a baby blackbird or starling, not sure which but we managed to get it off him and put it outside.
I went out and got close enough to try and feed it some bread and it opened it's beak as the babies do.
When it tries to fly only one wing expands so I am thinking it has a broken wing. It is just sitting on the grass, and I dont know what to do as it looks like it cant fly..
Cats are locked in.
Can anyone give me some advice ? |

Can anyone give me some advice ? | Hello,
Another cat problem I see. Happening a lot lately, it's quite an annoyance. But anyway what's done is done and all you can do is leave it, if it's a fledgling then the parent should be nearby, most youngsters finish the fledging period on the ground so it may not be able to fly just yet.
Maybe it might have fallen out of the nest.. In that case read the recent thread about finding juvenile birds, there is something about putting it back it and moving away from the area quickly, but READ first.
Thanks, HanD. |

| | | Re: Urgent help needed Hi ksg1970, It does seem that the wing is either broken or maybe just dislocated which sometimes happens when cats make a grab for it.
Your local vet may be able to help you so i suggest your move would be to phone them, at least they will be able to offer expert advice.
If it is outside it is defenceless so i would suggest you put it in a cardboard box for its own safety with some water and keep it soomewhere warm, but as for food requirements i couldn't suggest what the best food would be for a young fledgling, hopefully someone woth a bit more knowledge than me will also answer your post.

| | | Re: Urgent help needed Thanks but it is in a cats instinct I did try to save the bird and do keep my cats in all day at this time of the year. One just escaped when we were not looking.
More than a fledgling but probably just in shock have moved it under a sheltered spot with some fruit to hand and hope it builds up the strength to go by the morning. |

| | | Re: Urgent help needed Many years ago the cat I had at the time brought in a blackbird. I rescued it and it looked perfectly OK, but couldn't fly, presumably because of shock. I left it in the garage in a cardboard box overnight and it was perfectly OK in the morning - it kept pecking me when I took it out of the box and flew off immediately I released it. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
