Autumn at last?

With winter nearly on us, the birds are at last coming back to our garden. Those species which 'disappear' during the summer have gradually been reappearing but it's been a struggle to see six or seven species over a week. Today I've seen eleven species including a finch, long-tailed tits and a song thrush. These are winter-only in my neighbourhood.
I hear that there are large flocks of fieldfares in the midlands so perhaps it's worth going out to see what else has arrived here.

Re: Autumn at last?

It is great to see the disappearing birds return, for the last two mornings I have heard the songthrush and at 2am I heard a bird singing it's heart out, it wasn't a blackbird, maybe a thrush?

Re: Autumn at last?

I'm on the look-out for bullfinches, because just at this time of year we usually get about 20 that pop in for a couple of days on the way to somewhere else. Might be interesting to see if the mild weather makes them later this year - if they come at all.

Re: Autumn at last?

Mrs Fish, for last couple of weeks I've had both Song + Mistle Thrush singing most days at work as well as Robin + occasionally Wren.

Re: Autumn at last?

I had always thought that the Wren was the first bird to sing in the mornings. I do hope you arent all going to prove me wrong after all these years

Re: Autumn at last?

Sorry Jaki, the first birds I hear at dawn are Robins & then Wrens. These two species will sing all through the year except late summer & Robins sometimes through the night.

I also heard a Song Thrush last weekend & a Mistle Thrush the weekend before.

Re: Autumn at last?

You beat me to it.
I was coming on to post a thread to say my table/feeders have suddenly sprung into action again.
I recently moved house to a more rural place and have set up my table and feeders but was shocked at the little interest...put it down to them not knowing there was food yet but i have been here 6 weeks or so now?...then the last two days BOOM ! Starlings by the bucket load, collared doves, blue tits, great tits, sparrows, magpies, black bird and for the first time ever for me COAL TITS ! love the little darlings darting in and out for a piece of nut.
So yes i guess the abundant autumn berries and nuts are at an end and the birds are back to the feeders at last !
