| | | Help Identifying Bird by Call? It was around 8:45pm when I was sitting outside and heard this call. I've never heard it before so I decided to record it and find out what it is. My mum said it's probably a chick but it's pretty loud and mature sounding for it to be a baby bird. It sounded like it was coming from the trees but across the road we have many fields which have long grass but are usually filled with crows or a few magpies. We have also seen a few hawks around these past few years but we still haven't been able to identify them yet. The call lasted for about 5 minutes and wasn't very long. When it stopped, I didn't see any birds flying about that might help to identify it. This was in Northern Ireland.
I've looked on the internet but it's hard to find any call samples to listen to. I've posted this short video on Youtube to help find out what it is. YouTube - Unknown Bird?
Thanks for any help, much appreciated! |

| | | Re: Help Identifying Bird by Call? Hi Catherine and welcome to WAB. I reckon your bird might, perhaps possibly be a Greenfinch... that's what I would guess at. |

| | | Re: Help Identifying Bird by Call? Hello, and thank you for the warm welcome. After saying it was a greenfinch, I think you're spot on. The thing is, in the recording it seemed to go 'up' but I also heard it go 'down' but a much short shrill if you known what I mean.
Thanks for helping. |

| | | Re: Help Identifying Bird by Call? I can see why you might suggest greenfinch, but it doesn't sound quite right for one to me. Unfortunately I don't know what it is. I can't recall hearing anything like that before. It sounds rather peculiar. Sorry!
