| | | Golden Oriole Wondering through Lakenheath RSPB i heard a Golden Oriole a few times. Although bright yellow,it had many people wondering around looking for it like headless chickens ) Is this the only area in the UK with them as well as Cranes? Really nice call it has. Also heard three booming Bitterns. )
The downside of this reserve is that views are not great due to habitat.. |

| | | Re: Golden Oriole It's certainly one of our rarest breeding birds, though fairly common in parts of the continent + into central Asia (remember seeing quite a few in Kazakhstan), with possibly only about half a dozen pairs here in the UK. I used to go to Fordham to see them (which was well known so no secrets being revealed here) but believe this is no longer used.
Lakenheath is now the well known site for Golden Orioles + other sites probably best kept under wraps. You're right they can be fiendishly difficult to see despite the males brilliant plumage. If the weather's ok I'm hoping to get up there next weekend. |

| | Re: Golden Oriole My son and I saw a Golden Oriole at Raydon on Monday 6th June. It was under trees, the sun shone through the leaves drawing out attention to the bird. Previously seen at Holton St Mary 4 years ago when one briefly landed on a fence post. Sorry no pics yet! |

| | | Re: Golden Oriole Two years ago the lakenheath golden oriole's nest was visible from the main path. Best views I've ever had with the female visible on the nest and they male coming in and landing near by. Can't see me getting views like that again unless I go abroad. |

| | | Re: Golden Oriole Whilst working in Libya, typing texts for the students to sort out I gazed mindlessly bored out of the window across to our 6 trees. Grey/blue Eucalyptus like all the 'greenery' planted out on Libyan Oilfields. I had been staring for about 3-4 mins waiting for inspiration when I realized two of the trees seemed to be moving. Hundreds of Orioles. They must have been way-staging and popped in for a drink at our cistern. An amazing sight, per normal no camera. The trees fluttered and the whole gang shot off over the Staff quarters and on across the desert. Something I'll never forget.
