Tiny green droppings

Fortunately on WAB you can get away with questions like this.... while recently looking in to a very nice tree rot hole i observed what appeared to be a great deal of frass with a few tiny beetles wings in it. But my question relates to quite a large number of tiny (2mm long) fresh green droppings that had a sort of plastercine texture - almost like tiny water vole droppings. I am not a bird person so wondered if these are likely to be a small bird dropping? There was no nest and the hole was nice and dry. My other thought is that it might be trees slug droppings? But really I have no idea. Any suggestions warmly recieved. Thank you.

Thank you, yes I can see where you are coming from and that is the kinda size they were. But the hole was some distance up the tree and some distance away from leafy branches - so I think it would be a long way for a caterpillar to go for a poo (assuming the caterpillar was in the canopy somewhere)? The tree was a plane.
