I spotted this pair very high up from our garden.
I imagine that this is courting behaviour .......

I thought they were two sparrow hawks, not known for my bird ID skills!

Well, I've looked again at my books and it looks as thought I have it wrong - not for the first time.
Am I now correct in thinking the there is a female kestrel with possibly a male sparrowhawk, looking at the relative sizes in the third picture?

Colin | Have seen much the same thing on Sunday in Andover, I would certainly be of the opinion Male Sprawk and Female Kestral. Great shots too. |

difficult to be 100 certain for me with these pics, but they both look like sparrowhawks to me. This is a species known for gliding in circles on warm days. |

I also saw a male soaring at some insane height with Red Kites on Sunday. |

Jonathan | Agree with Jonathan. (Probably female Kes and male Sparrowhawk as Colin suggests)
For those not sure, compare the narrower wingtip shape of the larger Kestrel with the smaller Sparrowhawk's rounded 'hand' - basic difference between a falcon and an accipiter.
