| | | Harris Hawk Is it usual for them to swoop on Jack Russells? I was walking mine at the weekend and there was a bloke flying one over the footpath where I walk my dog. Luckily she was on a short lead and I was able to scoop her up and brush the bird off. It was a bit scary though. I've never seen a Harris Hawk that close before <GULP>

| | | Re: Harris Hawk I guess in the wild they don't meet many Jack Russells, but they regularly hunt small mammals + birds on the ground, often co-operatively with 2 or 3 birds, one bird flushing potential prey while other bird strikes. Guess your dog was lucky you were there!
They are fabulous birds; I was lucky to see them in the wild in Texas some years back. Harris Hawks are popular with falconers + like many such birds, do escape from time to time. This species is frequently employed in bird control measures, such as scaring gulls away from airfields or Feral Pigeons from city centres- I believe Ken Livingstone may indirectly use one for Trafalgar Square. |

| | | Re: Harris Hawk Harris Hawks often don't like dogs, apart from the one they might be bonded to if the falconer has - say - a pointer.
My friend had a Harris' and he also had a big friendly retriever and the Harris' would NOT tolerate this dog. It was comical to see this big daft retriever try so hard to make friends with this bird and he just wouldn't have it!

The Hawk looked a bit sheepish when I yelled at it. I think I scared it almost as much as it scared me!
