Little Grey Bird

I was sitting in my garden this morning when I noticed what I thought was a finch of some kind in the trees at the bottom of the garden. I'm shortsighted, and didn't have my glasses on so grabbed my camera, zoomed in and took a few pics. I expected to see one of the resident goldfinches or a greenfinches (I really am THAT shortsighted without my glasses on!). But this little grey fella (or lady) was peering back at me.
I'm a relative newbie to birds, and have flicked through my books and done the RSPB identifier... but can't find anything similar.

It was around the size or slightly smaller than a gold finch. Any ideas?

Has anyone else watched a dunnock on its "attract a mate" display? We have one that found a perfect spot on top of the garden fence and many times a day it was shuffling up and down doing this wing shivering-shaking display. It all seemed to no avail for little miss lonely, then suddenly one day it was joined by another and they seemed to have found themselves a spot in the nearby conifer trees. They're often to be found underneath the shrubs, hoovering up all the smaller seeds from the mix I put out.
