Unusual behaviour for a crow?

Hi all,

Behind my house there is a block of flats (well I say block, its 3 high and an retirement home) its pretty empty at the moment, there planning to renovate it - anyway...

On sunday morning I was looking out the window and a large crow was perched on the balcony, on the top flat, it was very large and caught my attention, so I watched it for a bit, and it flew over to the balcony door and started squawking at it and flying into the door

!

I thought it might have seen its reflection and got defensive etc but then it flew over to a semi-open window and wedged itself in

! It couldnt fit and just sat on the window sill..

I went out all day and when I got back there were 2 crows!

Its now friday and they are STILL there, they do come and go - there flying between a large pine and this balcony all day long.

What could it be?

Hi,

I would imagine that they are jackdaws. It is possible that they may have nested in the vacant flat and been locked out in some way.

Something I should have added. Jackdaws do pick a particular spot to congregate and re-meet with other jackdaws. If there was a nest inside the flat it may be too late. Did you notice if the balcony door was open before?

I have never noticed any Jackdaws there at all! One just appeared and then two! The flat has been empty for ages and the window has always been ajar (ive lived here for 7 months and its been the same). They literally seem to have just appeared from no where.

Hi purpleone and welcome to WAB.

Does this flat have a chimney? If it does then perhaps a member of the flock has fallen down into the vacant flat and the others are trying to coax it out via the window .... members of the crow family are exceptionally intelligent (except when they fall down chimneys) and jackdaws & rooks are especially social and group-minded.
