| | | RSPB attacked by Country Life mag as reported by Telegraph Hello
I am a fan of Birdwatch magazine on Facebook and this morning it sent the following link RSPB attacked by Country Life - Telegraph
A lot of the article appears to be about predator control. Makes for interesting reading and mirrors some of the discussions raised on here

| | | Re: RSPB attacked by Country Life mag as reported by Telegraph It doesnt mention the birdfood, nestboxes that are sold
the informative website with guidance on feeding small birds
nor free advice leaflets given out to members of the public in their thousands
at events and shows.
A good headline for their magazine but a lot of nonsense.

| | | Re: RSPB attacked by Country Life mag as reported by Telegraph I probably shouldn't comment without having read the full Country Life article but assuming The Telegraph have got their facts straight then it's not the RSPB that's out of touch. It seems to me that the single most important thing that can be done in the area of conservation is protection and improvement of habitat. From that all else follows. And no organisation can match the RSPB's work on that front (except maybe the wildlife trusts collectively). Quote: |
The editorial is neatly timed to coincide with the appointment of a new chief executive at the RSPB, Dr Mike Clarke.
| Sounds like Country Life are trying to set the agenda. And it also smacks of another attempt to protect the interests of shooting estates while claiming to be protecting songbirds.

| | | Re: RSPB attacked by Country Life mag as reported by Telegraph That seems a bit of an odd article anyway. Am I reading this right? Quote: |
In the most recent case three golden eagles were found dead in the Highlands and police are being investigated.
| They're blaming the police for the dead birds? |

| | | Re: RSPB attacked by Country Life mag as reported by Telegraph I think it should have been "the police are investigating". That's not the only typo either, thought I was reading The Grauniad for a minute there!

| | | Re: RSPB attacked by Country Life mag as reported by Telegraph I couldn't find the said article on the Country Life website, but did find one entitled "RSPB wants ‘more space for nature’". It includes the following paragraphs, "Aiden Lonergan, ‘Futurescapes' manager, said that protecting wildlife in fragmented ‘islands' was inadequate when dealing with habitat losses and rising temperatures.
Mr Longergan added that the RSPB would continue working with declining species such as red kites, cirl bunting and corncrakes, but ‘more space for nature' should be created."
Interesting... cirl bunting and corncrake are hardly your image grabbing predators. It would appear that Country Life have been hoodwinked by the anti-raptor brigade, whilst at the same time reporting about some of the other invaluable conservation work that the RSPB undertake. Shame that the Daily Telegraph has picked up on one side of the argument, without maybe investigating the true source of the original "report". | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
