an unusual starling feeding habit ?
this morning while watching the robins feeding their newly fledged brood under the seed feeders,
a starling flew down onto the lawn with quite a large object in its beak, which i was tossing about and wiping on the grass,
after getting the bins out, it became clear that it was a dead chick which must have come from a nest somewhere close by, as it was just starting to get its feathers, and was not one that had left the nest,
it went on for about 5 minutes, until another starling appeared, wanting a share at which point the two starlings flew off over the next gardens with the chick,
is this type of thing common with starlings? i know they will eat just about anything, but this is something i've never seen before, i wondered if the starling had taken a live chick from some nest, or if it had just found the chick already dead somewhere ?
