| | baby blackbirds hi im a new member and worried about my blackbird babies. i have a pair of resident blackbirds who have nested in a hedge next to my conservatory. 4 babies hatched out and at 11 days have disappeared. I found a dead one on the patio but no sign of the others. no evidence of attack. I checked the nest eventually through all the thorns etc no signs at all.. we have no cats about so does anyone have any suggestions. Im completey lost but im very new to all this. thank you: |

I have a pair of resident blackbirds who have nested by my conservatory. The 4 babies at 11 to 12 days have disappeared. No sign of attack but i did find one dead baby on the patio, a few yards from the nest. This baby had shown signs of slight attack. Not sure where mum and dad are. We have no cats in the area and infact have never seen a cat in my garden. The bush was very thorny and well concealed. My question is what could of happened to them. Thnak you... debbie |

| | | Re: baby blackbirds Hi,
At 11 to 12 days old the young blackbirds will be too big for the nest and not being capable of full flight, they should be dispersed into the undergrowth or dense bushes for protection. As regards the dead blackbird, there are many possibilities...predators, flying accident, genetics etc. Young blackbirds are particularly vulnerable to 'breaking cover' and I have found many at the side of roads, footpaths or general open spaces. What makes them do this I do not know....feeling safe? wanting parental attention? starvation?.....

| | | Re: baby blackbirds Thank you for your kind welcome. I am amazed just how attached i became to the new family. I thought more feathers or bits may of been about as evidence, such a shame to get them so far. I think dad has been calling but not sure of the call. He sits on the fence. Will mum and dad try again in the same nest. |
