Lesser Spotted Woodpecker
I got my first close encounter with one of these today. A female I think(?) - she just flew by and landed quite low down in a beech tree about 25 feet away. So I started snapping away with the camera.

I was a bit surprised just how small they are.

It wasn't until I read a comment on my blog and did a bit of research that I learnt that they are quite rare in Yorkshire so I'm very pleased I stopped just where I did!

Nice one! And yes you're right it's a female- no red on the crown.
