| | Bit of advice needed please... Hello All!
I confess that I do not know a great deal about birds. However, I have a problem that I hope I can get some advice on:
During this sunny dry spell, I have only just noticed that a couple of collared doves have started to build a nest (more like an empire at this stage) in the top of one of our drainpipes. They haven't laid any eggs yet, but I have a feeling that egg-laying could be imminent. My main concern is that when it rains, the nest (and potentially eggs/young) will get washed away. Also, they have the potential to completely block our drainpipe!
I don't want to interrupt what is a lovely situation (they are great to watch), but I feel that some action needs to be taken in order to prevent any deaths/blockages.
Any suggestions? My neighbour has built a box directly opposite on the side of their house in an effort to entice them over. They are having none of it! He thinks we should destroy the nest before they lay? Should we move the nest into his box? I feel so cruel! Ahh!
Thanks for your time,
Helen |

I'd block the access with some chicken wire. It's ultimately for their own good, as you are right that they will fail when it rains so they no chance there anyway.
You could try putting the nest in the box, but chances are they'll make their own decision about somewhere else. Any box needs to be more of a tray, rather than very enclosed, with low sides.
They have long breeding seasons, and better to nip it in the bud now than let them waste their time. |

| | | Re: Bit of advice needed please... Nice to know you have thought about this and I would tend to agree that it should be moved ASAP. I wonder if this is indicative of the shortage of natural nesting sites caused by our relentless destruction of the environment through building and pollution? | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
