| | | where can i spot owls? hello there
i absolutely love owls. i live in glasgow, and i was wondering if anyone knows anywhere in or around glasgow, where i could possibly catch a glimpse of these amazing birds. it doesnt matter which species of owl, as i think they are all equally as facinating.
any help would be very much appreciated! |

However, a study of Tawny Owls by the BTO in the 1980's, for example, concluded that the location of the U.K is not important, it is the coverage of woodland in a particular area which determines the occurrence of Tawny Owls. You should therefore look for any local areas around Glasgow with a decent amount of wooded space.
Moving onto other species, the best time to look for Barn Owls is at dusk, along road edges and fields / hedges, although you can often see them hunting during the day.
You won't see Little Owls in Scotland, however the Short-eared Owl might be seen or heard if you're lucky. They are rather rare.
I once saw a Tawny Owl during the day on a local patch. I was first alerted to a loud screeching of birds, Robin, Blackbirds etc., as if there was a predator around. Then, I turned around and saw a Tawny Owl sleeping in a tree. They are well camouflaged so good luck spotting them! |

| | | Re: where can i spot owls? Guinessman said it all really! I'd just add that short eared owls like moorland habitats and rough grassland areas and they can be seen at dusk and dawn and sometimes during the day as well. Find the habitat and you've a good chance of finding the owl....hopefully!
Good luck

| | | Re: where can i spot owls? Hi jm_sco. Welcome to WAB.
I haven't lived in Scotland for a while now but one of my old haunts was Overtourn House. I often saw Tawny Owls in the woods that surround the house and flank the burn.
The heathland between Overtourn House and Lang Craigs was good for Short eared Owls, saw them every breeding season.
If you drive head towards Dumbarton, turning off at Milton. Bowling is the nearest train station, it's a uphill slog!
Good luck and keep us posted.
Vince
