Cuckoo

Friends who live right next to an enclosure and real forest people said today that a Cuckoo has been calling every day for the last week on the outskirts of Brockenhurst.

No mistake possible, they both know just about every bird call there is.

Would that be a first?

Had my first few on the Forest last Saturday (17th) & for me they're late.

There have been quite a few Cuckoo reports over the last couple of weeks, including reports on here from the New Forest, so I'm sure they are right, but not the first!

Where is the best place in the U.K to see or hear Cuckoos?

I don't think I've seen or heard one since I was kid (over 20 years ago).

In terms of their parasitic habits, I heard Cuckoos prefer Meadow Pipit, Dunnock, and Reed Warblers nests, so I guess searching out the kind of habitats these birds favour would be a good place to start?

any good area of farmland with some wetlands and reedbeds tend to be good, as you say these areas are where one is likely to find host species.

the first of the year for me today in Clumber park, always nice to hear that sound every year
although the drumming of woodpeckers almost drowned the cuckoos call
