Similar to a blackbird but with a white band at the top of its chest.
It was some 200 ft away at the bottom of the garden near the river, seen through binoculars, perhaps a little bigger than a blackbird. |

How about Dipper? I was thinking RO, but made the connection with D when a river was mentioned. Still, there's more white on Dippers than I believe the amount mentioned in the description, so I think I'll go with Ring Ouzel...
