Hi everyone
Whilst driving last week I saw a heron flying overhead with the most enormous rat hanging from it's bill. I've seen herons eat frogs and all sorts but never seen one flying with a very large rodent. Is this a normal sight ? Been birdwatching 15 years and not seen it

I remember seeing photos in the Metro newspaper once of a heron that spotted a rabbit which it then caught, killed and ate.  |

Yes, this is perfectly normal. Fish make up the majority of what they eat, but mammals will be accepted too - especially if a Rat should happen to run past a Heron that is waiting by the water...

They will often feed on land searching for small mammals, herptiles, large insects, etc. |

I wish they would eat more rats 
'my' Heron spends long periods of time 'worming' in the fields, as does the Buzzard. (Not together ) |
