| | | Which grebe is this one?
Best of three photos as in one it was being chased off by a huge coot, and the next it had it's head under water. I would know a great crested but was unsure of this one...Thanks. |

| | | Re: Which grebe is this one? It's actually not a grebe, it's a female 'sawbill' duck.
These are often mistaken for grebes - so don't think that you've made a major error!
From the details visible in this photo I would say that it is a female Red-breasted Merganser (these aren't always easy to tell from female Goosander though). The bird is ringed so is likely to be a bird from a collection - assuming that it was in a London park close to 'SW London', which is given as your location |

| | | Re: Which grebe is this one? Ah - thanks - that's why I couldn't find it It was in St James's Park - haven't seen them there before tho. I did notice the ring, but couldn't make out any details. Will now go and do some more searching! |

| | | Re: Which grebe is this one? I have seen reference to captive Red-breasted Merganser in St James Park before - I believe that I am right in saying that they have only fairly recently been released on the lake (within the last year or less), that might not be correct though. |

| | | Re: Which grebe is this one? I had another look at the video clip I took and thru my books and I now think that Merganser is the one The bill is slightly upturned. I now have to take the soundtrack off as I am muttering loudly "I think it's a grebe' | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
