| | | Do warblers flock ? While in the works yard last week i noticed a small warbler flitting from tree to tree, then another caught him up.i thought a pair ,but then another 4 individuals followed very loosely.I think they were either willow warblers or chiffchaffs. There were plenty of chiffchaffs calling everywhere i went today but i have never seen a group/flock before .Is this unusual ?
cheers

| | | Re: Do warblers flock ? could have been an over night influx of birds and that have been grounded together on masse whilst on migration due to poor weather or visiblity and have seen them on the East Coast in very good numbers after poor weather has forced them down together.
Two years back ringers on a site i was working on in the early autumn were amazed by an overnight fall of Willow Warbler after very heavy showers and strong easterly blasts of wind and a bit later the same day i counted over 40 in one small stunted Sallow alone and they were everywhere on that part of the site and it is a sight i wont forget in a hurry. At one point i gave up trying to count them and sat still and had them literally flapping around inches from me hawking midges off branches of a small Hawthorn i sat next to .
Totals for the next day or so were amazing and all turned out to be un-ringed juvenile birds which appeared to have originated on the Continental mainland and are thought to have been blown off course onto the nearest land. It makes you wonder how many make it at times like that and what the true total number was. |

| | | Re: Do warblers flock ? Thanks for your replies..these were seen on a bright sunny morning going from tree to tree, like long tailed tits do.so i dont think it was related to bad weather darren.Although it must have been a great site to see so many as you did. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
