| | | Vaughan Williams ascending I took these yesterday. The larks were struggling to hold their station in a very strong wind.
A lovely Spring sight and sound
Colin

| | | Re: Vaughan Williams ascending Well done - I've failed miserably with these up till now - so I shall enjoy yours instead! Just as an aside to refer to the Vaughan Williams bit - I listened all day on Mon to the last 80 of the Classic FM's top 300 and once again The Lark Ascending took the top spot .... I must be in an absolute minority but I have to say it - despite a long time love of classical music - I really dislike this peice - I think I prefer my skylarks singing for real!

Four years on the trot that blooming Ralph and his 17 minutes of lark ascending has been voted number 1 - I have had enough , and to rub it in even more its will be on the CD on the magazine yet again
Colin I have never seen such fanstatic shots as those, I applaud your skill |

I've tried to talk myself into liking it for years or at least wonder what it is I don't like and I've not come up with a satisfactory answer ........ it does just the opposite of what music is supposed to - my heart doesn't soar nor my eyes water - it just grates on me..... oh well .........
And yes they are grand shots and worth enjoying ...... |

I think you have beautifully captured the essence of that lark's vitality ... something that I'd also tend to agree RVW's impressionistic piece falls somewhat short of achieving. |

| | | Re: Vaughan Williams ascending Out walking yesterday afternoon also saw The Larks Ascending.Their song and trills was well worth the walk by the open fields. |

As for Vaughan Williams - well I quite like his "Lark Ascending", always reminds me of that great gardener Geoff Hamilton and his series called "Paradise Gardens".
But I did hear a quote from Mrs VW who when asked about her husband's love of skylarks remarked that, " He wouldn't know one if he saw it!"
Such is life!

| | | Re: Vaughan Williams ascending I don't know about the music, but they always remind me of poetry: Hail to thee blithe spirit
Bird thou never wert
That from Heaven or near it
Pourest thy full heart
In profuse strains
Of unpremeditated art.
I reckon that reather nicely sums it up (Shelley I think) |

I gave up listening to CFM when I found that whenever I switched it on they were playing it!
