| | | Food for green woodpeckers I'm hoping to attract them at my hide despite them being pretty uncommon in my area. Just asking if anyone knows what food they favour. Be grateful for any info passed on, thanks folks.

| | | Re: Food for green woodpeckers I have only ever seen them feeding off the ground, ants and insects/larvae etc, I would off thought your best bet maybe fat balls/suet etc |

| | | Re: Food for green woodpeckers Though they are fairly common round me, I've never seen them at artificial food unlike the Great-spotted Woodpecker which regularly uses feeders.
Your best bet is somewhere wth some ant hills in an old lawn. |

| | | Re: Food for green woodpeckers I would imagine meal worms since they eat a lot of grubs in bark. Most wild birds are attracted more by moving prey. Oh yes never use dead mealworms. There is no food value in them and wild birds are probably nervous of a lot of dead insects in one place. I know all my birds give dead mealworms a wide berth. |

| | | Re: Food for green woodpeckers The green woodpecker seems to spend a fair bit of time scratching about on lawns, assume they are after leatherjackets or ants.
