First proper sighting of barn owl

I went for a wander around Martin Mere today and had my first proper glimps of a barn owl. I have seen them in captivity and I have seen the ghostly white blur streak through the fringes of my headlights on dark country roads, but never had I seen one where i had time to view it. I say time, it was about 10 seconds, but still pleasureable to watch.

What it was doing out at 2:50 in the day I have no idea.

I took some pictures to share. They aren't great. I didn't have time, the light was bad and Im not very good photographer.

Ironically I saw it at a hide in MM which I never see anything from inside. And what is even more ironic, if I was inside I wouldn't have seen it.

Well done! Barn Owls are always a wonderful treat to see.

This is a good time of year to catch them during the day whilst they are constantly hunting during the rearing season.

They really do gladden the heart don't they? As Davecatt says they often have to resort to daytime hunting - I saw ours poking his head out of the box mid afternoon a couple of weeks ago. They don't like hunting in the rain so as we have had a lot of wet nights recently this will incease their need for daytime hunting.

Great pic's, lucky you i have six owl boxes in trees and barn, no owls, just pigeon and jackdaw, twenty years i have waited, i do not think they like me.

Congratulations on the sighting! I saw my first wild Barn Owls a few weeks ago and really enjoyed watching them. Really made a change from the numerous Crows I usually see!
