bark stripping jackdaws

I've recently noticed some jackdaws in my garden stripping the bark off tree branches. The branches are stripped clean, so far as I can see right around and along their full length.

I've seen them flying off with the bark and I was wondering if this is nesting material or if there's some other reason for it. It's the first time I've seen this behaviour.

Any ideas?

Seen carrion crows do the exact same thing. Hold it down with their foot and start stripping big wads of bark off it and collecting it in their beaks.

Nesting material seems lke the most logical reason, but I really don't know at all if that's what it was for.
