I observed this group of 14 Bewick's swans yesterday and today at Burnhope Reservoir, Weardale, County Durham. The are presumably in process of migration to their summer breeding grounds. I was surprised they were still here the second day, but we are having gale force northeast winds, and I suppose they may be waiting for somewhat calmer weather before continuing their journey.
Sorry the pic is so bad, but I was only carrying my mobile phone for a camera.
What particularly interested me is that they seemed curious about us and approached to within about 50 ft. of shore, despite two happy dogs romping in the shallows. Perhaps they winter some place where they experience feeding from humans. I definitely had the sense they were scoping us out for the possibility of a handout. Or perhaps they are just naturally curious birds and not very shy. Anyone know?
