| | | Juvenile Woodpigeon I have had a new visitor to the garden over the last few days, seems to spend a lot of time here. It's a juvenile Woodpigeon and it looks fairly young; it can fly well.
Is it possible to have one reared so early? It looks far too young to be last year's. |

| | | Re: Juvenile Woodpigeon As far as I know all pidgeons breed according to environmantal conditions rather tha season but I would not have thought that the last few weeks were ideal breeding conditions for them. However if it has down on the top of its head and a white ring round its neck it is a young wood pidgeon.

Dave | Juvenile Wood Pigeons lack the white ring around the neck. |

| | | Re: Juvenile Woodpigeon Providing the conditions are right for them woodpigeons will breed all year round. During the very bad weather in January, when the snow was on the ground, I had three juveniles in my garden. They had obviously hatched and fledged in November/December before the cold conditions took hold. Woodpigeons are very hardy and resourceful birds which is why they are now so common.

Harold | They're so common now largely due to oilseed rape bumping up their winter survival. They've trebled since the 60s: BTO - Breeding Birds of the Wider Countryside: Woodpigeon
A juv woodpigeon shouldn't have white on the neck, but I can't think what else it would be. |

| | | Re: Juvenile Woodpigeon It's definitely a juvenile Woodpigeon. It doesn't have the neck ring, but has the white wing bars. |
