| | Massive Bird! What is it? Hello everyone.
Im wondering if anyone knows what bird this is?
I was going through the motion detected images that have been stored from one of my security cameras today and to my amazement saw this magnificent bird.
Not knowing much about birds have no idea what it is, so thought i would post it up here cause im sure someone will be able to tell me.
Whatever it is, it is certainly a BIG bird!
I have added a zoomed in and sharpened duplicate of the bird to try and help with identification.
Hope someone can tell me and a big thanks to those that do! |

Quite right Jason, I also suspect the OP is mistaken in thinking this is a large bird. |

Lol at pratical joke/burglar in disguise! Its definatly not a practical joke as the camera would have caught someone setting it up in the first place.
I am in the UK and living just outside of Norfolk, on the edge of Suffolk.
As the time stamp on the image shows that was captured this morning.
From what i can tell the bird has a greenish body with a yellow band followed by a black band and a white head. Never seen anything like it and looked through this sites bird identifier page and couldnt see anything that resembled it.
Hope someone can put an identity to this bird. |

| | | Re: Massive Bird! What is it? P.s. the window on that building that the bird is sitting on is approximatly 2ft in height. Which gives you an idea of just how big this bird is.
Is it from the jurassic days? lol |

Btw Dragze welcome to WAB (It really is flying past the camera btw in case you're being totally 'innocent' of any 'game' playing ) |

Has a kind of ringed plover feel to it?
Actually on second look its either great tit or blue tit with maybe some colour mutation on the head?

Ie. suggesting it was actually a ''massive bird'' using a deceptive capture. I was being deliberately obtuse. No offence meant. I'm afraid the internet is rife with people uploading deceptive camera shots. (I've got one from Egypt where my nieces are holding a full size pyramid in their hands even though they were standing nearly a kilometre away!) |

| | | Re: Massive Bird! What is it? How about the captures either side of this one? As you say, the camera would have picked up it being placed ( unless they've been omitted should this be a joke! ), so I assume it will also have picked up other photos of it - both as the bird approached this capture point, and flew away afterwards.
Good suggestions - in-flight is the reason for the ' large' perspective. Quote:

| | | Re: Massive Bird! What is it? And the size of the window is in no way relevant...its just flying close to the camera...simple perspective/optical illusion.
I am assuming the OP/ Dragze thinks the bird is actually sitting on the edge of the roof which is why he thinks it is massive?

| | | Re: Massive Bird! What is it? Thankyou to those who have welcomed me to this site.
I promise all of you this is not some sort of joke or wind-up! I wouldnt waste my time or yours!
I keep looking over this picture and zooming in and out of it on the pc and I am convinced it is perched on the edge of the roof, not in flight!
But regardless of if it is big or not in terms of ID i would describe it has having a greenish belly with a yellow band followed by a black band and a white head.
Thankyou to all your reply's so far. |

| | | Re: Massive Bird! What is it? Dragze is your security camera a constant stream or does it take periodic freeze frames?
As Jason suggests, perhaps you could post up the sequence shots both sides of the one you've given us.
Ps re the ID it is a Blue Tit as stated - look at this image http://farm1.static.flickr.com/205/5...8a2848ffc0.jpg

| | | Re: Massive Bird! What is it? in response to pictures before and after this event. The camera uploads the motion detected images to an ftp server over the internet and as the upload speed of the internet connection isnt great there are pictures before and after but due to the time delay they do not contain any with the bird in. There was just this one in a series of about 3images that contained the bird. I really wish it had have caught more of the bird.
Maybe the size of the bird is an optical illusion but im really not convinced. |

I'll go with your Blue Tit, Jason. Second choice Lapwing, though I rate this now a less than 10% chance. |

| | | Re: Massive Bird! What is it? I am not in any way accusing you of a wind up...or of a big bird or whatever being placed in the picture by a joker....i am though TELLING you that you need to look at the pic with a photographers and birders knowledge and we are all saying that the bird is in flight and close to the camera...it happens a lot and can create funny looking illusions as it has here.
The general 'jizz' of the bird...is that its a passerine (small perching bird like a sparrow or tit size) it does not have the 'jizz' (overall shape, sillhouette, feeling, body proportions, eye size etc ) of a large bird..but it does have all the proportions of a small bird that now 'looks' large....i can see wing movement (flight).
As for ID...that is a little tricker due to the fuzzyness and bad quality of the pic...i agree on greenish belly, black band, white head and what look like dark eye patches but tits like blue or great tits can come in many colour defections or 'mutations'....

I'm afraid you will have to take it on trust that those of us who see a normal sized Blue Tit are correct.
