As Jason suggests, perhaps you could post up the sequence shots both sides of the one you've given us.
Ps re the ID it is a Blue Tit as stated - look at this image http://farm1.static.flickr.com/205/5...8a2848ffc0.jpg

| | | Re: Massive Bird! What is it? in response to pictures before and after this event. The camera uploads the motion detected images to an ftp server over the internet and as the upload speed of the internet connection isnt great there are pictures before and after but due to the time delay they do not contain any with the bird in. There was just this one in a series of about 3images that contained the bird. I really wish it had have caught more of the bird.
Maybe the size of the bird is an optical illusion but im really not convinced. |

Good suggestions - in-flight is the reason for the ' large' perspective.
You don't want to phone a friend, then? |
I'll go with your Blue Tit, Jason. Second choice Lapwing, though I rate this now a less than 10% chance. |

| | | Re: Massive Bird! What is it? I am not in any way accusing you of a wind up...or of a big bird or whatever being placed in the picture by a joker....i am though TELLING you that you need to look at the pic with a photographers and birders knowledge and we are all saying that the bird is in flight and close to the camera...it happens a lot and can create funny looking illusions as it has here.
The general 'jizz' of the bird...is that its a passerine (small perching bird like a sparrow or tit size) it does not have the 'jizz' (overall shape, sillhouette, feeling, body proportions, eye size etc ) of a large bird..but it does have all the proportions of a small bird that now 'looks' large....i can see wing movement (flight).
As for ID...that is a little tricker due to the fuzzyness and bad quality of the pic...i agree on greenish belly, black band, white head and what look like dark eye patches but tits like blue or great tits can come in many colour defections or 'mutations'....

I'm afraid you will have to take it on trust that those of us who see a normal sized Blue Tit are correct. Was interesting to see how this thread developed though |

Unless the sun /camera is over exposing and bleaching the head out to look white?

But i was geniunly shocked/surprised and intrigued when i came across the picture. And as i said in OP dont know much about birds hence posting it on this site for more experienced people to express there thoughts and knowlege on it.
Therefore i accept your answer of that it is an optical illusion and probably just a blue tit or great tit. Although i must admit that is very disappointing given that due to the illusion it looked to me like a massive bird!
Just wish the camera had of caught more images of it then maybe that would have proved the illusion from the very begining.
Anyway many thanks to all those that have comitted the time to reply. |

a wiser man than me once said eliminate everything you can and what you're left with, however unlikely, is the answer. Alternatively, I've never believed anyone who could identify everything - so it could be a ?????
clear as mud? - birding is such a great hobby.
I'll leave the rest up to the professionals.
