| | | Anti-social long-tailed tit! Hi there, I'm new to this forum and fairly new to bird-watching so go easy on me
I've had a solitary long-tailed tit come to my garden virtually everyday for the past 2-3 weeks. Now all my guidebooks say how gregarious/social this bird is and one even says that it is never seen on its own. I've seen big flocks of them over the local nature reserve but in my garden its always this one bird on its own. Maybe it has something to do with the time of year and breeding season?
Has anyone else seen these birds on their own? |

| | | Re: Anti-social long-tailed tit! Hello and welcome. The blue tit has probably been coming to your garden to feed for a while. So it knows what food is in it's domain. I expect it could be one of a pair. |

| | | Re: Anti-social long-tailed tit! It's funny you should say that coz its only yesterday that I saw a solitary long tailed tit in the garden. I was a bit surprised at first as they always come in a large group. |

| | | Re: Anti-social long-tailed tit! Yes, it does happen. There have been a lot of studies on their behaviour including why some are apparently ostracised. Unfortunately I forget where I read about it! Long-tailed tits are very co-operative animals: helping others feed their young for instance. I think it was suggested that those who don't help in the shared activity were 'sent to Coventry'!
There's a neat summary at: http://www.bto.org/gbw/PUBLICATIONS/...BT42_8-9LR.pdf |

coconut feeder yesterday where I normally have a small flock

| | | Re: Anti-social long-tailed tit! Ive seen several singles this week, perhaps due to birds spreading out and pairing up ready for breeding when they are less gregarious. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
