| | [ID] Firecrest? (Back-end only...) Afternoon all,
I have had a good day's birding today, including some confiding Goldfinch and my closest female Chaffinch to date. Anyway, I saw this as well... when I saw the bird at the closest I instantly thought Firecrest, but the only photo I got showing the individual in the panic was a back-end one! 10/03/2010 Gold or Fire? But now I look I think Gold...
I'm sure it's simple and straight-forward, but I'd appreciate confirmation either way
Thank you.
Take care, Jason

Never seen a Firecrest, so don't take it from me, Jason

| | | Re: [ID] Firecrest? (Back-end only...) Hi Jason
My initial thought was Goldcrest, Firecrest has a more orangey tinge to the flanks like my local one which I managed to get a very poor photo of yesterday:
Now if you'd only managed to capture the cheeks and head...

Ha! I've just searched through my photos... and SUCCESS!!!
When I first saw it I couldn't get the camera to line up with the bird's perch as it kept moving off. I therefor just pointed the camera a little distantly at the general area it was in eachtime and hoped for the best. A detailed search of each image at full-size on my computer revealed this little beauty near the end. To say I'm ecstatic is an understatement!!!
I suppose the first photo of the camera-shy bird is a bog-standard Goldie, but this Fiery one has joined the flock/individual.
Take care, Jason ( A very excited one )

I'm .
I'm thinking of adopting and perfecting your bird-spotting strategy myself. Point, focus, click in the general direction of as many birds as possible then spend cosy evenings looking for that special something on a good quality computer screen. Might have more success than I do at present!

Oh, did I mention that I have seen a Firecrest today? Just wondered... |

| | | Re: [ID] Firecrest? (Back-end only...) Jason, I laughed when I saw this thread.
I've just got home from spending over an hour crawling and stooping in thick undergrowth in poor light, trying to get some pictures of firecrests at Felbrig Hall in Norfolk.
Got loads of blurry shots, empty branches and rear ends. After deleting loads and doing a bit of editing I managed to get 3 pictures.
