Vanished collared dove and egg

For a couple of weeks we watched a collared dove return to a nest built at the base of the satellite dish. She sat on a single egg. Then suddenly a couple of days both bird and egg disappeared and no evidence of the egg or bird could be found anywhere around or below. What could have happened? We can´t imagine the bird going off with the egg.

I imagine a predator took the egg (squirrel, another bird etc) and the dove no longer needed to sit.

This is by far the most likely thing to have happened
