| | | Day out [Plus ID's] Hey Everyone,
Went for a walk with camera (as usual) hoping to photograph Kingfishers but not one showed up! So instead we took a different route to usual and saw at least 5 different species.
First of all, Is this a Fieldfare, Redwing and starling in one shot?? Is this a Whooper Swan (if so, You're not supposed to get them down here in the south east (Says the book)) What Domesticated (I think)Goose is this? Lucky Catch for a Song Thrush We are clueless on this one Are these Mandarin Ducks? (sorry for picture, will upload better one soon) This was a Pretty Wren, but extremely fast (hence the blurriness) Are these White Stock Doves or Collard Doves? (if you can tell) And a beautiful Mallard to finish off
Made a Change from Kingfishers
Thanks very much,
Connor

| | | Re: Day out [Plus ID's] Hi Connor,
Your identifications are pretty much spot on, so well done for that and for getting some nice shots (the Song Thrush with the worm is a great shot).
The goose is a 'farmyard' Greylag, the white doves will have Rock Doves as their ancestors rather than Stock Dove or Collared Dove, and the one that you are clueless about is a breeding plumage Cormorant.
Cormorants from the continental race tend to have extensive white on the head during the breeding season, but as some British race birds can also have a lot of white on the head it is not safe to say it is definitely a continental one. Both races have the white patch on the thigh in breeding plumage.
All your other ID's are correct (although it is possible someone may convince me that it's not a Starling in the first shot - it looks OK but it's not the bet angle!). |
