Something of a surprise

I spotted this unusual pheasant a couple of summers back and rather surprisingly, considering the regularity with which this land is shot on, he still appears to be around. Every time I've seen him he's been on the verge in a quiet country lane, and today was no exception.

I had to take a quick snap with one hand whilst reversing slowly past him, hence the dreadful image quality.

Can anyone confirm to me that, as I suspect, it is just an anomalie rather than some particular species? He is incredibly blue, the photo doesn't really do him proper justice.

Yeah! It`s melanic ring neck without the ring.

Many thanks Dave. I've just googled your answer and it seems they are actually quite common.

... so they won't be naming the new species 'Hammond's Blueneck' afterall.
