Food Preference

Today , I decided to try puting out different foods in seperate dishes. I was curious to find out which foods each type of bird preferred.

First - Hanging Feeders.

Peanut Feeder (well , it's my neighbour's but is just over the fence ) - Blue Tits, House Sparrows , Starlings and a Jackdaw.
Sunflower Hearts (in my home made feeder) - Blue Tits, Coal Tits and Starlings.
Finch Mix (in another home made feeder) - Blue Tits and Coal Tits.

Scattered on the ground - a general all round mix - Starlings, Rooks, Jackdaws, Blackbirds, House Sparrows, Dunnocks, Chaffinches, Robins, a Wood Pigeon and a Song Thrush.
Tray of mixed seed (on the ground) - Starlings, Jackdaws, Rooks, Blackbirds, Chaffinches, a Song Thrush and a Blue Tit.
Dish of chopped fruit (soaked sultanas, apple, apricot, banana) - Starlings, Rooks, Jackdaws, Blackbirds and a Song Thrush.
Dish of grated cheese - Rooks and Jackdaws.
Birdseed Pudding (seed mix and soaked breadcrumbs mixed with fat and left to set in a dish) - Starlings , Song Thrush and Blackbirds (Starlings go mad for this ).

Small Dishes on the ground

1 - Mixed Seed (as above but with added rolled oats) - Blackbirds , Starlings, Jackdaws, Song Thrush, Wood Pigeon and Robins.
2 - Haiths Mealworm Munch - Robins, Starlings, Dunnocks, Jackdaws, Blackbirds, a Song Thrush , a Coal Tit and a Blue Tit.
3 - Finch Mix - Starlings and Female Blackbirds.
4 - Sunflower Hearts - A Coal Tit.
5 - Striped Sunflower - A Jackdaw.
6 - Black Sunflower - Blackbirds, Jackdaws and Rooks.

I found it interesting to watch both the reactions of the birds and to see which foods they chose to eat. Some of the birds walked/hopped round , looking in every dish before eating from one. The Wood Pigeon ate from dish 1 for 20 minutes. The Song Thrush kept going back to the birdseed pudding. The Chaffinches were curious but too wary to eat from the dishes. They may eat from them tomorrow though as this was the first time I had put dishes of food on the ground. I was surprised to see the Blue Tit and Coal Tit land on the ground then eat from the dishes. They normally eat from only the hanging feeders.

Well SuzieandFlo, what a comprehensive experiment that was! I've taken the liberty of printing a copy of your 'feeder trials' (hope you don't mind!). That's just the sort of input and information this forum thrives on. Well done again! Wizzo

Re: Food Preference

Fascinating, S&F! Interesting that you didn't get the Chaffinch on your feeders. Down here I cannot put food on the ground because there are lots of moggies about, and the Chaffinches feed OK. But I wonder if they have adapted their habits out of necessity.

Will you carry your experiment on and gather more data when they are used to all the options?

Re: Food Preference

Chaffinches do regularly take food from feeders, so I don't think they are doing it because of your cat Ash.

Re: Food Preference

That's funny cos my chaffinches never go on the feeders they always eat on the ground. No cats here.

I did have to laugh though, as the starlings appeared on nearly every type of feeding experiment. They're such thugs, but so funny.

Re: Food Preference

Thanks for your replies .
Wizzo , you are more than welcome to copy and use this information , as is anyone else .
Last night it started snowing so I brought all of the dishes indoors overnight. This morning , every little bit of available food on the ground had been eaten. I had to refill the grated cheese dish and the birdseed pudding as those 2 dishes were totally emptied yesterday.
Within minutes of puting the food dishes out again this morning , I had about 20 Starlings , 6 Jackdaws, 2 Rooks, 5 Blackbirds (3 male, 2 female), a Song Thrush, 3 Robins, and 2 pairs of Chaffinch tucking in to breakfast .
House Sparrows , Dunnocks , Blue Tits, and Coal Tits followed shortly afterwards.
The birds today chose to eat the same foods as they did yesterday. Saying that , the Blackbirds spent more time eating the finch mix , particularly the females. The Blue and Coal tits spent more time on the ground eating from dishes rather than using the hanging feeders. Finch mix and sunflower hearts were their choice.
The Chaffinches were a little braver today as some of them ate from the dishes. I'd put an extra dish of finch mix out and put it close to the fence. I also scattered a little mix on the ground around this dish to see if that would encourage them and it did. The ones which are still wary looked like juveniles. They tend to stretch themselves out to reach a seed on the ground rather than move a step closer to the dish. Meanwhile , the adults confidently eat from the dish and closely around it.
I had a pair of Wood Pigeon today instead of just the one on its own. They ate for ages from the dish of finch mix. One moved on to sunflower hearts and the other was going to follow. It (think it was female) watched its mate eating for a few minutes then went back to the finch mix.
I almost had a visit from a Greenfinch today ! .
It landed in a neighbours hedge, started to fly towards my garden then flew away when something spooked the other birds. I didn't see it again today.
I was sure I had seen a single Greenfinch last weekend but it was just a very quick glimpse before it flew away. I wasn't 100% sure as it was so quick , but seeing it again today has confirmed that it IS a Greenfinch. There's no mistaking that beautiful shade of green with the yellow wing flashes .
I can only watch the birds and give so much detail at the weekends as I work full time and am out of the house for 12 hours on weekdays. I will continue to watch and record their eating habits though as I am interested to see if their habits change as they approach breeding and rearing chicks .

Re: Food Preference

Just a quick post to update.
I'm going to have to stock up on bird food at the weekend
I've just been puting a mixture of food out on the ground every morning before I leave for work at 7am. Yesterday I had several Blackbirds, a Song Thrush, a Robin and some House Sparrows waiting for their breakfast . I love the quiet "chook chook chook" from the Blackbirds as I'm puting the food out. They were all on the ground feeding just seconds after I turned my back .
This morning , I had a garden full of House Sparrows and Dunnocks and a few Blackbirds having breakfast at 6.45am.
I'll have to buy more finch seed. It's going down very quickly. I usually buy a standard finch mix (millet, canary seed, oats) from a pet shop and add hemp seed and niger seed to that.
I'll also have to stock up on Haith's Mealworm Munch, and will buy some extra dried mealworms to add to it.
I'll have to see what I need and make a shopping list. I'm going to do another food trial at the weekend using different brands of general mix. I already have 2 brands , Haith's Really Wild Bird Food and Countryside Feathered Friends Wild Bird Special. I know of another 2 different mixes I can buy to add to that trial. All are wheat based with varying amounts and types of other seed. As the arable crops in this area are mainly wheat and barley, this type of food is closest to "my" birds natural diet (in addition to insects , worms etc in better weather).
I'll update this thread again at the weekend when I can give details of my next trial.
Meanwhile , I've prepared a tray of chopped apple and banana, soaking some sultanas and chopped dried apricot (in water with a tablespoonful of locally made honey), and filled some dishes of various mixes for the morning .

Re: Food Preference

Today's Food Trials

I did a food trial on general mixes today. I managed to buy 9 different mixes and weighed out 100g of each mix , put it in numbered dishes and put the dishes on the ground in an order that I could define from the window (I'm in a 1st floor flat), then sat watching with pen and paper at the ready.
At the end of the day , I brought all of the dishes in and weighed them. That would show whether or not any of the food had been eaten , even if I didn't see any birds eating from a particular dish. The trial ran from 9am - 5pm today.
1 particular dish was popular as I had to refill it at 2.30pm ! It was completely empty. Another was almost empty so was also refilled. 2 of the dishes still had 100g of food in them at the end of the trial.
Interestingly , none of the birds went straight up to a dish and started eating. They looked in the dish first then either ate some mix or moved away. Some birds looked in several dishes before eating from one. It was quite funny watching them walking round looking in the dishes. Some of the birds behaved as if the dishes were some kind of trap and wouldn't go near them. Others ate only from the ground in between the dishes, foraging for older left over seed amongst the grass. Who would think they would be so fussy about general wild bird mixes .
I also put out 3 other dishes of food. I couldn't weigh them at the time as my digital scales were playing up. I measured these foods out with a little measuring cup and weighed a cupful later. Then I calculated how much food was in each dish depending on how many cupfuls I'd originally put in.
I'll have to get my information in order so that I can then post the results of my trial.

Mixed seed on the ground (large and small seeds).

Hanging Feeders :-

Peanuts.
Sunflower Hearts.
Nyjer & Canary seed in a nyjer feeder.
General mix.
Finch mix (in a dish in a hanging birdhouse feeder).

And here is a list of what the birds ate :-
Blackbird (male) - Dishes 1,2,pecked at 3,6,7,ate a lot from 9,10,Birdseed Pudding,Dried Mealworms,Fruit, generally pecked around on the ground and ate Finch mix scattered on my pallet ground table.

Blackbird (female) - Dishes 5,pecked at 8,ate a lot from 9,10,12,Birdseed Pudding, fruit, pecked around on the ground and ate Finch mix scattered on the pallet.

Song Thrush - Mostly ate Birdseed Pudding, ate from dish 10 and on the ground.

Starling - Dishes 1,2,4,5,pecked at 8,9,10,12,seed on ground, birdseed pudding, fruit and peanuts (from hanging peanut feeder).

Jackdaw - Ate a lot from dish 9, 10,seed on ground and fruit.

Rook - Ate fruit and seed on the ground.

Wood Pigeon - Ate from dish 9 and seed on the ground.

Robin - Dishes 10 and 12, seed on the ground, fruit, dried mealworms, AND Sunflower Hearts from a hanging feeder.

Dunnock - Ate from dish 12, seed on the ground, finch mix scattered on pallet.

House Sparrow - Ate seed on the ground , finch mix on the pallet and peanuts from the hanging peanut feeder.

Chaffinch - Seed on the ground, Seed spilled from dish 4, pecked at dish 3, Birdseed Pudding, mealworm munch and finch mix on the pallet.

Blue Tit - Sunflower Hearts, Peanuts and Finch Mix all from hanging feeders.

Coal Tit - Sunflower Hearts and Finch Mix from hanging feeders.

Watching the birds today was interesting as their behaviour was different. Some birds wouldn't go near the dishes , when they had eaten from them before. Maybe it was because of the number of dishes on the ground , there aren't normally 12.
Usually , the birds feed in my garden in early morning, early afternoon and just before dark. Today they were coming to feed constantly throughout the day.
The Robin surprised me by eating from the hanging feeder. He was enjoying the sunflower hearts. (I normally put some on the ground but hadn't today).
Some of the birds looked surprised and took a visible step back from the dried mealworms. It's the first time I've put them out.
Although I haven't seen any birds eating the millet sprays I've put out , I don't think it will be long before they realise it is food, (the 5 in a bunch tied to a stick in the ground should attract something).

Anyway , that's this weekends food trial over. I'll have to think of something else for next week as it's very interesting to do these trials .
