1st sign of spring ?

i know we have had a long hard winter but is spring round the corner? seen 2 pairs of magpies starting to build there nests, they normally take a few weeks to construct so as we head into march the signs are there. also noticed more goldfinches and a few greenfinches around, has anyone else spotted any? rossy

Last week I watched a female Blackbird collecting nest material for her nest in a Mahonia.

Plenty of bird song + displaying going on now.

Felt quite mild today in London, though there was some heavy rain mid-morning. Also had 2 Herons sat on nests at 1 of my WeBS sites.

my dog wanted a garden visit at 4am this morning as I opened back door for Benji, in the middle of a snow storm , birds were singing very loudly Spring in the air maybe ?

That was at Buxton in the 1970's - wasn't it? My husband was walling on the A6 Bakewell - Buxton Road and they were snowed off!

I saw a magpie with the longest branch last week, looked like it was off pole vaulting! A family of Starlings are back in there nesting site just outside my bedroom window, they came back last week. Also a lot more bird song in the mornings....good stuff!

The local blackies, songies and chaffinches are all singing now and last week I saw my first returning oystercatcher on Hollingworth Lake, Lancs.
