Can someone identify this bird call?

Was up at 4am this morning, and as well as a tawny owl going all out to wake the neighbourhood, I heard another call which to me sounded like a raptor of some sort. I managed to get a VERY poor recording of it. Here it is (324kb, MP3 format). Ignore the "rumbling" - that's just background hum from the MP3 player.

Any ideas?

sounds like a tawny owl.They make this type of call as well as the usual hooting.

Hi Richard,

Yes, that's definitely a Tawny Owl. You often hear a mating pair or perhaps an adult and a juvenile calling to each other in this way.
