Mind you, I don't have a suitable lense so I have to wait for one to come low enough - when the cat starts being a pain in the bum I wonder about staking her out to get the kite close enough |

In the second photograph it looks like one of the Kites has a radio tracking device or something similar attached to it. Any ideas?

Over the years I have seen many Red Kites, especially when driving up and down the M40, but must admit have not noticed any tags. Then I suppose it depends on how many are tagged and where.
