| | Collins bird guide 2nd ed. Just a heads up on the new 2nd edition Collins guide.
Like the first edition, it sounds like the best you can get, about £20.
Its on my wish list!
Review by birdguides here. Review: Collins Bird Guide 2nd Edition, Lars Svensson, Killian Mullarney and Dan Zetterström
Cheers
Ken

| | | Re: Collins bird guide 2nd ed. I remember when they were almost giving the 1st edition away in Asda. I think it was £4 at one point.

| | | Re: Collins bird guide 2nd ed. I got mine on Wednesday, Waterstones website showed at £17.50. I reserved it to collect and was annoyed to find it was £25.00 at the counter.
Great guide. |

| | | Re: Collins bird guide 2nd ed. The new updates on large white-headed gulls has been long overdue, with now double the number of pages, giving coverage of recent splits such as Caspian, Yellow-legged + American Herring Gull.
Also updated the scientific name changes for birds such as the tits, some of the smaller gulls, etc.
Certainly the best field guide out there for Europe + Middle East, though perhaps a bit daunting for a beginner! |

| | | Re: Collins bird guide 2nd ed. This second edition is now receiving excellent online and magazine reviews.
Basically reviewers are saying if you have the first edition then get the second edition and if you haven't got the first edition then also get the second edition .
I am off to order a copy now ....

| | | Re: Collins bird guide 2nd ed. a couple of qeustions about this book:
it's priced at £11.69 on amazon for the paperback. is it worth paying a few pounds more (£15.75) for the hardback version or is the paperback good enough and potentially more convenient?
is it the sort of book you'd take out with you, or is it more of a reference book? (i'm asking from the point of view of a novice. i always take my rspb DK pocket birds with me)
is it a huge weighty book to carry around?
i'm keen to buy a book which has more info than the two i currently own and this seems to be the book of choice, but i want to make sure i buy the right one
thanks in advance. |

thanks in advance. | Its not a book you would want to lug around on a walk, in my opinion.
I have (had) both hard and soft back, mainly because I saw 2 for the price of 1 offer and bought the hard back with the matching "Trees" book. I gave the hardback copy of issue 1 to my son yesterday.
Its an excellent book, and well worth having back at home for the significant extra detail over and above the field guides. |
