| | | North Norfolk I am planning a trip to Norfolk towards the end of March. Could you please help with a little advice on what birds will be about and where the best place is to see them.
Thanks

There were a couple of similar threads last year that might be helpful. I know the timing is out, so your birds might be different, but here they are: birdwatching in norfolk north norfolk bird sites |

Anywhere between Holmn, (norfolk wildlife trust and NOA reserves) and Winterton can be productive. Horsey area is good for Common crane, (saw 2 yesturday without trying hard) and Hickling reserve is only a couple of miles inland as are a lot of broadland sites. Holkham near wells is a large site aswell with a variaty of habitats.
March might not be the best time to go although it is very weaher dependant. April saw me dipping out on wryneck and hoopoo (I think that was april!) but a Ring Ouzel was nice to see. May is probably better and last year I saw Woodchat shrike near Morston, Temincks stint, kentish plover, black tern and loads of spoonbills at cley. I also missed loads due to work!
The whole of the coast is threaded with dykes ditches and marshes and anything could turn up anywhere. Just enjoy yourself, its a wild lovely place.
Cheers David
P.s. And I don't work for the tourest board |

| | | Re: North Norfolk Hello David,
You mentioned Winterton (Dunes) which I love visiting for the solitude and sponge cake and coffee at the cafe, but apart from nightjars and green woodpecker (and natterjack toads) what else should I be looking out for amongst the dune areas ?
I have nightjars only 2 miles from where I live near Sizewell, so have never bothered to go all the way up to Winterton to hear them as it would mean coming home late, but is there any Dartfords up there ?
Must admit, I've moved on from birds to fungi now, but I still like to know what's about.
Neil.
EDIT. Just thought, people will think I'm daft re: nightjars and sand dunes, of course, they are where the dunes meets the pine and birch.

I only go to winterton dunes now if something rare turns up on the pager, which is normally migration time, so I can't really comment on the wildlife there. As for Dartford Warbler I usually go to Dunwich Heath for them and see them from the comfort of my car, normally before heading on to Minsmere.
