| | | Green Woodpecker When I put some apples out for the Thrushes I certainly wasn't expecting this young lady!
We do get Green Woodpeckers regularly in the garden aerating the lawn for ants but it hadn't occured to me what they might eat in this weather.
Now I know - and will go out to buy some more apples |

| | | Re: Green Woodpecker Wow! Lovely, Astra. A star bird for you, looking great in your pics in the snow. What a lovely surprise for you. I wouldn't have expected one of them either. Thanks for sharing |

| | | Re: Green Woodpecker Good shots Astra.
I keep putting apples out, but the fieldfares are finishing them off before anyone else gets a look in.
We don't see Green Woodpeckers around our neighbourhood. |

| | | Re: Green Woodpecker Great pics! I am sooo envious! Have seen Green Woodies flying around where I work (obvious flight pattern), but never got that close to them. Have a Great Spotted that comes to my garden but now am hoping that if I keep putting the apples out I might get a Green Woody visiting....fingers crossed! |

| | | Re: Green Woodpecker Glad it's found something to eat. Green Woodpeckers are a species that does suffer in prolonged frozen spells as they can't access the ants, etc they normally feed on from the ground. |

| | | Re: Green Woodpecker After reading posts on here about apples being quite popular I have now gone & bought some; will put them out tomorrow & see how they go down. I put out some blueberries today (much to the annoyance of my boyfriend considering how much they cost) & the birds more or less turned their noses up at them - cheek, they weren't even the economy ones!
We used to have woodpeckers (green & great spotted) but I didn't see them at all last year, maybe they can be tempted back. |

| | | Re: Green Woodpecker I always hear these birds near me but they can never be seen. I think they skulk around on the other side of trees to houses. I'm sure i have seen them in flight-deeply undulating. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
