| | | Young buzzard still pestering parent We have a resident pair of buzzards who nest in a small fir plantation about 200 yards from our house every year. We normally have a great view of the fledging youngsters who use our house roof as a convenient perch when learning to fly, and seem unphased by our presence having been "brought up" with our daily comings and goings.
Last year they were very late nesting' in fact we thought they had gone somewhere else initially, but they did raise one youngster, who was quite late to fly. Often once they fledge, they tend to move away, but this year, one parent and this late-bred youngster have stayed here. He/she is still chasing, pestering and calling the parent bird, especially at dusk when they roost in the fir trees, and he/she goes on crying until after dark some evenings. I think the youngster is quite capable of fending for themselves, but still hasn't got the message to move on!
I know birds of prey are often late to become independent from their parents, but is it normal for one to be hanging around this long? | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
