| | Help with ducks Hello,
I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me identify some ducks I saw. I was out walking off Christmas dinner yesterday and today and came across loads of ducks. I identified a few but these threw me.
The first I spotted today while at attenborough nature reserve in Nottinghamshire (there is also a wonderful Ruddy Shelduck present if anyone wants to check it out). bird7 on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
The second and third were spotted at Colwick park yesterday (along with a male Smew if anyone is local and wants to see a cool looking duck) duck on Flickr - Photo Sharing! http://www.flickr.com/photos/1674721...n/photostream/
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Claire

| | | Re: Help with ducks The first goose looks like a hybrid to me with some domestic Greylag (ancestor of all domestic geese apart from the Chinese which comes from the Swan goose)
The other photo shows various domestic Mallard types. Similarly the Mallard is the ancestor of all domestic ducks other than the Muscovy Duck.
I remember going to Colwick Park over a decade ago to see a wild drake Bufflehead- a very rare diving duck from North America.
Welcome to the forum by the way!

| | | Re: Help with ducks Hi Claire, and welcome to WAB. I would agree with Aeshna on the ID of your ducks/geese. I like the other photos on your Flickr site, esp the Smew... I would love to see one of those |

| | | Re: Help with ducks hi claire, i live in nottingham and visit attenborough NR quite a lot, nice pictures! i used to visit colwick CP quite a bit too, but haven't been in a while, but i've had some excellent days there, watching the crested grebes on the marina is brilliant! good for fungi too.
wildfowl are a bit of a passion of mine, so i might have to grab a bus to colwick to see the smew! if you're at attenborough its definately worth going to the delta hide to the northeast of the reserve, seen loads of ducks there and if you're lucky you might see a bittern (i haven't )
BTW, your last duck is a red crested pochard, not seen these at colwick! |
