It is American,but is often kept in collections and seen as an escape. |

He, for he is a drake, is a Carolina Wood Duck Aix sponsa and has already been said a native of North America commonly kept in wildfowl collections from which it frequently escapes, the female has in common with most ducks a much more subdued plumage.

A beautiful duck! I notice he is fully winged; there's a drake like this I've seen with Mandarins (their closest relative) on the Pen Ponds + also at Kew (not one of their collection birds).
It's a not uncommon escapee + there have been many records of them breeding in the wild in this country, but haven't formed self-sustainable populations like their close cousins.
There have been a handful of records of birds that have been potential genuine vagrants from North America, but it's always difficult to get them accepted due to the frequency of escaped birds. | | |
