Waxwing watch.

It was about this time last year that we had a good influx of waxwings.
I don't know what the weather is doing in Scandinavia or if there's a shortage of berries but if it's cold and they're short of grub,I'd like to see them here again. Please let us know if you catch up with any on this thread.

Re: Waxwing watch.

Most of the local Rowans here have been stripped of their beries by Fieldfares, but I've got my eye on some places where there are still some left.

I haven't seen any Waxwings yet, but I'm not giving up hope just yet.

Re: Waxwing watch.

We need a big change to our weather patterns before we get any big numbers, these South West gales aren't any good at all.

Yep, you're right. It'll push them back if anything, I should think.

Re: Waxwing watch.

Possibly a bit of movement today, a few sightings appearing along the east coast this morning.

Why is it that waxwings seem to hang out near supermarkets? Actually I do know why ... all those cotoneasters in the supermarket carpark landscaping. The carpark outside Sainsbury's at Meadowhall, Sheffield is a favoured waxwing spot ....

I haven't see one this winter!

Can't remember hearing of any being reported in this area of norfolk on the RBA pager recently.

Re: Waxwing watch.

That's a bit disappointing as we had a good run of them last year. I suppose in a way though, it means there's enough to eat for them where they are and so prevents them having to undertake a hazardous journey across the North Sea to feed themselves.

Re: Waxwing watch.

Hopefully the will be an influx next month I think it varies when it happens, some times its later in some winters than others.

Re: Waxwing watch.

Trouble is then, if they get here later, the fieldfares and redwings may have gobbled up all the berries!

Several reports along the North-east coast today too, suggesting some are starting to come across.

Re: Waxwing watch.

This winter is definitely proving to be a bit sparse on the Waxwing front despite this ....

Bird spotters enjoy influx of waxwings into Norfolk

I went to West Mersea yesterday where 2 Waxwings have been seen for several days .... no Waxwings there but when I got home, the BirdGuides website said that they had been seen

Re: Waxwing watch.

There's been a very confiding individual in London (haven't been for it) in the Finchley area the last 3 days. On the first day there were 3, but subsequently just the one.

Re: Waxwing watch.

We have three about 20 miles from me at a village called Wilnecote, near Tamworth and they have been there for a few days now.

I was going to go for them yesterday but my pond filter developed a fault and by the time I had rectified it it was too late to go.

I am going to have a look for them this morning as they were still there 5 minutes ago.

There has been a small influx from the middle of February and flocks of up to 30 have been seen in various parts of the eastern side of the country. Some are beginning to spread inland now as they look for new feeding grounds so it is likely that over the next couple of months you may get a few near you.

John
