My post above was very tongue in cheek but if I were a researcher for the programme I'd definitely be reading WAB. A large and active membership all posting about where they've been and what they've seen - sounds perfect!
So if any Autumnwatch researcher reads this - hello and keep up the good work!

| | | Re: Waxwing watch. Just a very quick question, mods (or anyone else), please feel free to point me at any other threads answering this.
I've seen reference in this and other threads to numbers of birds (not just Waxwings) being seen at specific locations, and I don't think that necessarily the poster concerned has seen them all his/herself. So, my question is, where do you get this information from? I'd quite like to know and maybe sign up to receive this myself, or is it just word of mouth?
Regards, Audrey. |

| | | Re: Waxwing watch. There are alerts you can sign up for. Like Rare Bird Alert (RBA). You can get texts on your mobile and access to maps, and probably other features. I tried it once but you really need to be into these things to appreciate it and start paying your hard-earned cash for it. You can try some of these alerts for free I think. I guess it's how the Twitchers all find each other.
Also I have a quick nosy on BirdForum every day. You get access to a rudimentary RBA map there. Have a look, it's easy to use, and quite addictive.
EDIT I won't post a link as I think it's a bit off to post a link to another forum.

| | | Re: Waxwing watch. Birdguides.com is another and you can get a rudimentary free subscription that allows you to check today's sightings only, which, as it happens, is absolutely littered with Waxwing reports today, literally all over the place |

| | | Re: Waxwing watch. Try Rare Bird Alert ( Rare Bird Alert - RBA Home Page) - as Debs says you can texts or just subscribe to the online version (which I do) and can also get it on my i Phone via Safari. You can narrow your search down to areas or even sites and track back about 10 years on specific species.
I can't remember what I pay a year, something like £30 but it's easily worth that.
There's also Birdguides.com but I fell out with them over reporting of Red Kites!

I use Birdguides, Rare Bird Alert, London Wiki, Surrey Bird Club for sightings.
